PEST AT HOME
1

Pestokill’s trained Technicians will provide a safe and effective solution. There is much more to pest control than treating the symptom. You will receive advice on what caused or attracted the pests in the first place as well as an effective eradication program. Our Technician will provide a suitable solution to prevent a future pest invasion.

If you are tempted to try and do it DIY, remember to be successful you need to understand why the pests are there in the first place, have knowledge of the pest biology, understand their habits and behaviour and then plan for safe and speedy eradication.

What type of property you have doesn’t matter to a pest, they don’t read ‘keep out’ signs and are ready to make your home their home.

Pests will take advantage of whatever environment we leave open, we create some ideal environments for them to thrive. What pests are likely to invade your home or business today.

Garden Ants (Lasius niger) are perhaps the best known ant to the people of the UK. At home they will start outside and move inside to source food and harbourage, in business they will invade soft drinks areas, spillages and food stores. They will nest almost anywhere and whilst the flying ants emerge and swarm in the summer we are finding ants active throughout the year due to the climate and central heating. Although many people will try a DIY product there is an art to the application which must be thorough and an understanding of the insects behaviour is needed. Professional gels and banding insecticidal sprays are used to treat the nest and to create a barrier.

Wasps can be social and build nests together or solitary and lay a single egg in a crack or crevice. At their peak a social wasps nest can contain 6 to 10 thousand wasps which tend to be more aggressive toward the end of the year when the workers die off. Wasp stings are painful and can be dangerous. Their presence will spoil the pleasure of drinks on the patio and food from the barbeque, they also come into the premises looking for sweet treats.

Pestokill can treat the nest or supply wasp traps to draw foraging wasps away from a business critical area.

Bees may be solitary or may live in various types of communities, there are many varieties many of which do not sting or cause any harm. If they are causing harm and a risk to human health we can relocate or remove them.

Control is a necessity for these nuisance pests!

Filthy Rats or cheeky Mice are probably what we think of first when pest control is mentioned and rightly so. Rodents are never far away, taking advantage of any suitable harbourages that we provide and then taking whatever food supply we leave accessible to them.

The term Rodent comes from the Latin term ‘rodentus’ meaning to gnaw and includes, rats, mice, rabbits, squirrels etc. Rodent teeth continually grow which give them a need to gnaw to cut back their teeth to avoid abnormal growth. This gnawing action leads to destruction of millions of pounds worth of damage to products and building structures.

Rodent’s teeth are as hard as iron and can easily gnaw through timber, lead pipes, hard plastics and copper tubing. The most common indication of an infestation will be gnawed products and droppings.

You can expect to find 60 to 80 droppings per day, greasy marks along walls and pipes may also indicate a heavy infestation. These are caused by smear marks from the rodentÕs fur, they are clean in themselves spending 4 to 6 hours per day grooming. Mice have weak bladders and urinate over whatever surfaces they pass over.

Any holes larger than a biro pen need attention. A rat will easily gain access through any hole larger than 15mm and a mouse 10mm. Pipes and cable ducts around a building are highways to access all areas. Proofing may consist of concrete, metal plates, expanding foam, wire wool or brush strips.

With all pest control we must remember that pests will take advantage of any situation that we leave them. A hole in a wall, a gap at the bottom of a door, waste food left out, food incorrectly stored, liquids or water available, these situations are all invitations to pests.

Need more Reasons to Eradicate Rats and Mice

The cost of having rodents goes far beyond paying to get rid of them. You will have damaged products which you have to throw away, you will have damaged cables and pipes which need repairing or replacing, and you will have diseased bacteria which can be lethal such as Salmonella, Leptospiral Jaundice, and Meningitis which can be transferred to humans or animal.

Consider the cost of not controlling Rats and Mice? Damage to 20% of the worlds food supply, Structural damage or even fires to buildings due to gnawed wires, transmit diseases to humans and animals if thats not enough they will stop business’s trading due to Environmental Health Officer notices and hefty fines.

Effective pest control costs little more than what you spend a year on window cleaning, the consequences of not having pest control are at the other end of the spectrum.

Squirrels

The first grey squirrels were brought here from North America in 1876 and were later introduced by the Duke of Bedford to the park at Woburn Abbey where they thrived.

Grey squirrels are adventurous and happy foraging on the ground where the find their vegetarian meals.

Once in your property they may nest and gnaw through roof joist, electric cables and your stored items. Make sure that all potential entry points are sealed with no overhanging trees.

We can cure them, but prevention costs less!

Fleas (Siphonaptera) -The adults are 2.5mm in length with a flattened body. They have a very hard outer skeleton which makes them difficult to crush.

BIOLOGY: Fleas are typically found where the animals sleep or visit and can easily be transported on shoes and trousers into other areas. Fleas can jump around 15cm and if their original source of food is not available they will feed off another host. Although they will not be able to reproduce they will live for about a year. They are activated by vibrations and breathing and can survive without a feed for up to 6 months if the property is vacant, vacuuming will help although a thorough professional insecticidal treatment will be necessary.

Bird Mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) – When birds leave their nest the red poultry mite will go in search of a new blood meal. You may feel itchy and see moving specs of dust on your walls, that is red poultry mite. The adult female is 1mm long in length and 0.4mm in width, varying in colour from grey to red depending when their last blood feed was.

Control will involve identifying the source such as a birds nest whilst treating the origin and destination of the insects.

The Bed Bug (Cimex lectularius) population has exploded in recent years, partly due to the pesticides and that we have not been as effective in controlling them, but more due to their hitch hiking ability to spread around a town, country and the globe on transport networks such as planes, trains and taxi’s, into hotels or our homes.

Adult bed bugs reach 5-7 mm in length, while nymphs (juveniles) are as small as 1.5 mm but are also laterally flat allowing them to access tiny cracks and crevices. Adult bed bugs are reddish brown in colour, appearing more reddish after feeding on a blood meal.
